With a rapidly aging population and increasing access to medical services, the health care industry continues to grow. Many positions will be available besides those for doctors and nurses. Hospitals and health care facilities are in need of other officials to provide support services for patients.

Health Science Careers

Many of these health science careers are behind the scenes, but they still serve a critical role in providing excellent care to those in need. Below are five health science career opportunities in today’s market space. Although these positions all require a bachelor’s degree in health science, some employers may prefer a graduate degree for employment or further advancement.

Pay Scale - Three Dollar SignsPatient Educator

For patients in complicated and difficult medical situations, it is imperative that t
hey completely understand all of the options available to them. This is especially the case for patients facing serious diseases and surgeries. Patient educators work with patients to inform them about all of the options available to them. They lay out the exact costs and benefits for a patient and their family, and ensure they know the consequences of each decision. Patient educators may also be involved in helping  patients and their families understand the relationship between insurance and medical care.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary among patient educators is $65,470. The position has a bright future, with an expected 26 percent growth rate by 2020.

Pay Scale - Two Dollar SignsHealth Educator

An important key to healthy living is developing healthy habits, and education can help. Health educators work with students of all ages to teach them about human health and healthy habits. This includes everything from why it is important to brush your teeth to in-depth lessons on organ systems. By providing these services to students, they can gain an early understanding of how to live healthily. This can contribute to preventing diseases and an overall healthier life.

The BLS reports that the median annual salary for health educators is $48,790. The career is expected to grow 21 percent by 2022, giving it a faster-than-average growth rate.

Pay Scale - One Dollar SignCommunity Health Organizer

Community health programs can help neighborhoods work together collectively to implement healthy habits and improve quality of life. Examples may include a local health program to provide free and easy cancer screenings or an eye exam drive. These programs provide invaluable services to communities that otherwise may not receive them. Many community health organizers work with communities that aren’t as well educated in healthy living skills and require a stronger background in good health habits. Success in this role can lead to an improved quality of life for those positively affected.

The annual median salary for community health organizers is $34,620. The career is also expected to grow 21 percent by 2022, making it another career with a bright outlook.

Pay Scale - Four Dollar SignsLab Manager

Medical tests often involve extensive lab work and care to ensure that the correct test results are distributed to the correct patients. This work involves tremendous organization. Lab managers typically have to keep up with a large amount of records to ensure that they are easily accessible by doctors when needed, as well as maintain federal and local safety and privacy standards. These labs range from drug treatment labs to research labs.

According to the BLS, lab managers have a median annual wage of $88,580. The expected growth rate for this position is 23 percent by 2022.

Pay Scale - Four Dollar SignsHealth Care Facility Coordinator

While many patients heal in hospitals, there are many other kinds of health care centers available to those in recovery. Health care facility coordinators operate these centers, which take the form of nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, or other types of clinics. These administrators work behind the scenes and manage the administration of a center without direct contact with patients. They ensure that the center is properly staffed, that patients are cared for and that everything is running smoothly. These facilities drastically range in size, and maintaining control over them is no small feat.

The median annual wage of health care facility coordinators is $93,290, according to the BLS. The role is also expected to grow 12 percent by 2022, a slightly-above-average figure.
